This year the school councillors have been part of activities to celebrate our new library. They have toured and voted on the book corners in each classroom – well done 6SD!
In January, the councillors officially opened the new library with author Caryl Hart. With more planned to celebrate reading, the school councillors are excited about what is to come.
A big project the councillors will be working on this year is regenerating the friendship garden, working with the eco-ambassadors and gardening club. Our aim is to dig out the planters and plant in lots of wonderful new sensory plants including different herbs and wildflowers to help local wildlife. We hope to make the area a fun and relaxing space for all children to use.
Last year, our school council helped Paralympic Gold Medallist and canoeing superstar Emma Wiggs to officially open the new Aldi store on Rykneld Road. She then joined us in school to give a motivational assembly to the children.
Emma spoke to the whole school about the things that she needs to be the best that she can be at her sport, encouraging the children to always try their hardest. She talked about equality and how her disability had not hampered her determination to succeed. She also went on to announce the winner of a school-wide competition, designing a healthy eating poster.
Afterwards, she spoke to the school council about the similarities of their roles — for her she represents the country, the children represent the school—and the pride that this generates.
She presented them with fruit and veg donated by Aldi.
