Background
In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education (PE) and sport, to be used to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision. Funding has been allocated to all maintained and state-funded schools with primary phase pupils from 1 September 2013. A typical primary school has received about £9,250 annually every academic year since 2013. Funding is set to continue for the academic year 2019/20.
Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.
Our school
In 2019/20 our school has received: £19,640.00
In 2020/21 our school will receive: £19,790.00
This is how we spent our allocation in 2019/20:
· procuring quality-assured professional training for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport eg. handball and games
· quality assuring the work of sports coaches and instructors employed to coach in PE lessons and after-school sports clubs
· providing extra, additional activities such as outdoor and adventurous activities
· to offer free places at out of hours sports clubs in school
· to introduce a new sport eg handball
· to continue to support the Activity Challenges for the whole school to increase fitness and stamina levels
· to fund Yoga Bugs for EYFS and Key Stage 1 and purchase yoga mats
In 2020/21, we will use the allocation for:
· procuring quality-assured professional training for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport
· quality assuring the work of sports coaches and instructors employed to coach in PE lessons and after-school sports clubs
· buying into existing local sports networks such as school sport partnerships or community sports coaching initiatives. This also includes competitions ran by the city and local secondary schools, following up on the clubs offered through Premier Sports.
· providing extra, additional activities such as outdoor and adventurous activities, including the installation of an outdoor orienteering course.
· providing a specialist PE teacher to deliver the level 1 and 2 Fun-Trition program to Key Stage 2 pupils, focusing on developing wellbeing, healthy lifestyles and fitness
· embedding the ‘Get Griffe Fit’ initiative into school. This is a whole school competition aiming to encourage all children to become more physically active and develop core fitness.
· providing resources for the schools ‘Mini-Leaders’. This enables younger children to become more involved in physical activities. Furthermore, new Aerobic leaders have been introduced, where the more able Year 6 pupils lead an aerobic session, getting the other children involved in exercise during lunchtimes.
· procuring specialist training to introduce new sports (or sporting activity) to the school. Funding will be used for CPD for staff and to deliver these activities during PE lessons
· To provide ‘free’ places at before and / or after school clubs. Each term FSM and or vulnerable pupils are invited to attend.
The impact of additional funding on improving the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision:
· Introduction of new activities eg yoga, handball and archery
· Maintain good practice already established in school
· All PE teaching now good or better
· New competitions working with Littleover cluster schools and within the city
· Increased competitive sport
· Greater participation in PE lessons
· Greater emphasis on physical activities throughout the school
· Improved stamina, participation and coordination
· Increase opportunities for Outdoor Learning and Outdoor sporting activities.
